Black Dog, Second Chance
Black Dog, Second Chance
Black dogs are the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized in shelters.
Our mission: For whatever reason, people do not like black dogs. They are rarely adopted from shelters and the most commonly euthanized. They are frequently ignored even though they may be friendly and well behaved, while the other lighter-colored dogs get adopted quickly. Whatever the reason, it is true, these dogs generally wait THREE TIMES longer to finally be adopted. In turn, the shelters give up on them and they are euthanized. Our mission is to rescue these black dogs, just moments before euthanasia, and help them find their forever homes through an adoption process. Our 501 status paperwork has been filed, we work solely on a volunteer basis and any money donated to our organization goes to pay for much needed vet bills. Also note that we do not have a shelter. If you are interested in a particular dog, please submit an application or contact the foster parent listed on that dog's profile. We will schedule a home visit once you complete an application.
Please consider adopting a black dog today.
But wait! We don't just rescue black dogs! We rescue any dog that is typically left behind by other rescues. They just happen to be mostly black ones, but some aren't.
If you are looking for a particular type of dog, please email us. We can find you the dog you are looking for!
We need volunteers!
We need volunteers! There are many areas that need to be filled, perhaps it's your calling in life! =)
We need someone to help with advertising. This would entail putting an ad in the buffalo news for our adoption events, hanging flyers in the pets+ store advertising our adoption events, advertising on craig's for our adoption events, even hanging signs on bulletin boards in supermarkets, etc. Publicity is the key!
We need a team to help with fundraising! Do you have a great idea for a fundraiser? Our fundraising team would be responsible for planning and executing fundraising events. Small or large, every dollar raised counts. Do you have connections with a school that can hold a bake sale, or have a school-wide dog toy drive? Maybe you know of a business that wants to sponsor a Friday "dress down" day. Maybe you have connections at a park or summer event that would be willing to hold a "chili cook-off." We welcome new ideas!
Event Planner— This team is responsible for organizing adoption events in the area. If you are an organized person who enjoys talking to people and planning events, then we could really use you. We are going to be applying for our NY State incorporated and 501c3, so event planning would entail calling pet stores, malls, fairs, local stores, etc. to arrange adoption events, submitting necessary paperwork and coordinating other volunteers to work the events.
We need transporters! When we pull dogs, we need someone to help us in various ways. We need drivers to occassionally drive to Erie, PA and pick up dogs. Fredonia is another stop. We also need people to meet at home base, in Akron, when the dogs come in, to bathe them, deworm them, deflea them, etc etc and then get them to thier foster homes with crate and food.
We need people to help with home visits. The foster will set up a specified time when the home visit will happen, and perhaps it's right in your neighborhood? We like to do home visits in pairs- for safety reasons.
Vets- We need people to pick up dogs and bring him/her to the vets. It is difficult to get appointments during the evenings, so if anyone is available during the day, this would be a job for you!
