Catch us in the Bee! -- Wednesday January 6th, 2010

Catch us in the Amherst Bee! If you live in the Amherst, NY area, then you probably read the Amherst Bee. This week Black Dog, Second Chance is featured in the lifestyles section! The reporter, Kate Mockler, did a superb job spotlighting our rescue as well as the plight of black dogs all over this country. She also touched base on the necessity of spaying and neutering both dogs and cats alike, to cut down on the population and euthanasia rate. If you happen to be in the Amherst area, pick up a copy, I think you'll enjoy reading it. (you can also subcribe to the newspaper) If you'd like me to mail you a copy, send me a self addressed, stamped envelope to: Black Dog, Second Chance P.O. Box 626 East Amherst, NY 14051 Woof!

Help Nibbles -- Sunday September 13th, 2009

Please help NIBBLES THE PUPPY! Nibbles is a 3 month old puppy who we saved from a shelter, only to be faced with death a second time. Nibbles is the sweetest puppy ever, and loves to give kisses. She is currently in the Orchard Park Emergency Vet undergoing treatment for Parvo, a very serious and deadly virus. Her estimated 3-5 day stay is $1600-$2100 for her recovery. She made it through the first night, though it was an uphill battle for her, which proves to us that she is a fighter. She is doing her part, so now it's ours: financial responsibility to help her survive. We are currently planning fundraising activities for the future, but the need for money is now. The bills are starting to rack up and we're not sure how long she'll be there... We know the economy is poor, but if you are able to reach deep into your pockets and spare even a dollar, we would very much appreciate it. Please help this puppy! You can read her story, see her picture, and get updates on her progress on our main webpage at www.BDSCR.org

Name our New Black Dog! -- Saturday April 4th, 2009

Name our new Black Dog! This is Diva, well, that is her old name. She needs a new beginning. And with a new beginning, comes a new name. Here's the deal.... Chip in, and we'll add your choice of name for her to our list of names, then we'll pick the crowd favorite! *** All the money donated will go toward rehabilitating this dog and will pay for dog socializing classes and obedience that will help her. We pulled this dog from the local SPCA in Tonawanda when they called us to help this lovely soul who was not doing well in the shelter situation! *** Here's her background and her personality: (to help you find a fitting name and to understand why we need to raise money for her!) She is a gorgeous black lab/Weim mix with a pointy nose and a sleek body. She is a dainty flower who is as graceful as they come! She glides as she walks and it is joyful just to watch her. She is very smart and in just a short while she has mastered the sit and paw trick. We are certain that she can learn just about anything. She has enjoys running and tossing her toys in the air and we are certain she'd just love the water! =) she would make an excellent jogging partner and would probably outrun the fastest greyhound! However, she is not jumpy and does mind her manners. She is a medium energy dog and settles down nicely after a day or two in her new surroundings. She is bashful at first and will approach you cautiously but will become your best buddy in no time flat. She will have a very strong bond with her new mom or dad and likes to follow us around. She is one of those dogs that you read about in the paper- the kind of dog who rescues their owner from a fire, or pulls their owner out of the freezing lake. Do you know the kind? She's the kind of dog who would be so grateful of a compassionate owner and the bond would be so strong with her person once she trusts them that she'd do anything for them- even run into a burning building. Yeah, that kind of dog. She has bonded with my husband in the very short time she's been with us. She nudges your hand when she wants petting and puts her paw up if you are done scratching her ear. She looks at you with a little bit of a cross eye, one of her eyes turns inward if you are sitting very close to her face and she has the cutest expression on her face, it's so adorable it makes you want to cry! She is a product of a divorce and was turned into the local spca in Tonawanda. This poor gal was at a loss. She didn't know what to make of all the sounds, the people, the smells, the barking. She cowered in her kennel and shivered. When a man came to get her from her kennel, he reminded her of her mean old father so much that she ran under the table, peed, trembled and wilted. (we were told the dad never really liked her and perhaps she could sense that) The shelter was no place for a delicate flower! The SPCA called us, because they know we love those black dogs the most, and we zipped right down there to meet her. She had a little pent up anxiety at the shelter when we met her, that we are working through. We could just see the anxiety in her eyes when we looked at her. She has gone through a lot of changes with this divorce and all that it has brought with it. She missed her mom- and was pacing at the door of the shelter and looking for her. She's much, much better now that she's with us and out of the shelter. We are trying her out on a new exercise routine, and her new mom or dad will have to commit to exercising her on a daily basis and really work on a schedule and routine to keep her on track with things. Dogs crave routines and structure and she is no exception. Her back legs still tremble a little when things are scary to her, but she will cling to you for reassurance. When you tell her things are okay, she will settle down and she is fine. She just needs a very gentle hand when things are scary and she bounces back quickly. Because we suspect that her former dad abused her (possibly just with loud words as she is not hand shy and doesn't cowar as though anyone is going to strike her), it takes her a second or two to sniff out certain men. It's not all men, she's fine with most- it's just the ones who happen to remind her of her former dad. Once she realizes they aren't him, she's fine, and it's only a second or two and she recovers, she watches with her careful eyes and then she'll wander up and give a good sniff to say hello. Because of this, we'll need to take her to dog socializing classes (because there are people there too!). She pulls on the leash and will require some work in that area. We have also found out that she has shown an interest in cars. When I first got her back from the shelter, she still had some anxiety in her and before bringing her into the house, I took her for a short walk. She sniffed around and when a car whizzed by she pulled on the leash to chase it. My husband walked her the next day and when a car went by she ignored it. (was it just the anxiety?) Anyways, we will have to work on sit commands and getting her attention on us when a car approaches and giving her treats and positive reinforcements as cars approach so she can learn to "leave it". She is sooo smart and so people motivated that I am certain she will pick this up in no time. When she tilts her head to look at you she has one eye that tends to lean inward and has the dopiest, cutest expression on her face. It's priceless! (oh, and she's housetrained) Her previous owners said they never crated her, so the crate is new to her. We are crating her and she is doing just fine with it. She will reluctantly go in her crate, but she does it because she really wants to please us. She cries just a little inside at first, but settles down nicely. Now, she needs a name!

Dogs for research? -- Monday January 5th, 2009

Shelter dogs being given to Research Lab! We need your help! Crossposting: Please.....Although this may not be in your home state, write to the people below to pressure them to bring this to an end. I have taken the picture out of the body of this email as it is an upsetting photo, which you may not choose to view. ----- Original Message ----- From: "" Sent: Mon, December 29, 2008 23:35 Subject: Montcalm, MI - YOU CAN Help to End the Sale of Shelter Animals toResearch Labs For Profit Montcalm Co. Michigan- Dealer Sells Dogs To Research Labs WE CAN put an end to this dirty practice R&R Research http://guide.labanimal.com/guide/companyd.jsp?b=5285 of Howard City, Michigan has been under contract with the Montcalm County Animal Shelter for purposes of euthanizing their unclaimed animals after the mandatory 5 day hold. For a period of time, and up until recently, the gassing of the animals had been carried out in a “CO2 barrel.” R&R Research may also come into the shelter and pull any animal he deems appropriate post the hold time, for sale to research labs. R & R Research, A History of Shady Dealings Cited for Animal Care Violations http://www.michanimalnews.com/Montca...l_Control.html ***Yes, It's a For Profit Business (From MI Animal News) To listen to the B Dealers and their supporters, you would hear a tale of altruism, concern and philanthropy. The B Dealers claim they are helping humanity by taking pets from shelters and selling them to research institutions. They rarely include the fact that they are for profit corporations, making money off of each animal that they sell. For example, USDA records indicate that R & R sold 592 animals in 2004, leading to gross receipts of $99,723. In 2005 R & R earned gross receipts of $179,115 based on the sale of 611 animals. 2006 was a really good year, R & R gross receipts were $196,272 based on sales of 621 dogs and cats. Montcalm County is giving dogs and cats to R & R and based on its submission to the USDA, R & R resells the animals for an average of $311 each. Shelter Statistics 2004 through 2007 shelter statistics http://www.michanimalnews.com/Montca...ng_Fields.html The shelter reports reveal that no attempt to save animals lives is made by the Montcalm County Animal Control Shelter. Less than 10% of the dogs and cats are returned to their homes or adopted. Research dealer R & R took 14% of the shelter animals and gassed the remaining 70%. Dogs Cats Total Admitted: 4109 3926 8035 Returned/owner: 550 6 556 Adopted 431 99 530 Given to Research 519 297 816 Killed by Gas 2271 3382 5653 R & R is one of 5 active Class B Dealers http://www.docstoc.com/docs/2832874/dba-michigan in the state of Michigan who is permitted BY LAW to take animals for this profitable business. Please read this recent article http://www.michanimalnews.com/co2_euth_followup.html by Justine DePalma of the Michigan Animal News http://www.michanimalnews.com/Home_Page.php who has done extensive research on the subject with the latest information of the euthanization practices as well as the continued agreement with Moncalm Co. We can make a change to STOP THIS and the time is NOW The contract with R&R Research is up for renewal in January and the city commission will have the first of its hearings on January 12th 2009. Please make your voices heard and use the sample letters below to be sent to the City Commission of Montcalm Co. along with the city of Stanton’s mayor. FW: From Susan Hayley sugull@bellsouth.net, Subject: Help STOP it, Pound Dogs & Cats Sold for Research, Montcalm Co, MI Hello, A few weeks ago many of us rescues, transporters and other animal lovers were all included in a series of e-mail pleas that were an effort to rescue 11 dogs headed to a research lab. Several of us have combined our efforts, including web searches, to try to help stop the practice altogether. This letter comes to you in hopes that you will all join in to send a strong message to the people who can do something. And if we all write to them it WILL be a strong message. We have effected change before with our combined voices. I am told that Montcalm County, Michigan, routinely sells animals to research. Several rescuers have been working non-stop to rescue animals from that facility--from a fate worse than death. But what also has to be done is to stop the practice. The county's contract with the Class B dealer (R & R Research of Howard City, Michigan) is up for renewal in early January. The Montcalm County commissioners need to hear from all of us that this barbaric practice has to stop. Please ask the county commissioners to vote not to renew the contract with R&R Research. Be persistent. Be well reasoned. And always be polite. There are two sample letters at the bottom of this email. This will come up for a vote at the commissioners meeting on Jan 12, so please do not delay. Montcalm County is one of the few remaining counties in the country that still betrays the trust of its citizenry by turning animals from the “shelter” over to the atrocities of research. Not only is the practice barbaric, outdated and sharply criticized by ethicists, medical experts and animal lovers alike, but the lab that Montcalm chooses to deal with (R&R Research, Inc. of Howard City, Michigan) has come under fire for unethical operations and flagrant violations of law. R & R has engaged in less than ethical practices including listing itself as an animal shelter in the yellow pages. The State of Michigan Attorney General’s Office ordered the ads removed. Quite obviously, R & R is no shelter. Ionia County Animal Control ended its relationship with R & R after it was discovered that a dog that an Ionia Animal Control Officer claimed was shot to death, was actually at R & R Research. An undercover investigation by WOOD TV in the 1990's showed video of R & R owners gassing animals in a rusty 55 gallon drum. In 2006, the USDA cited R & R for improperly transporting dogs. The poor creatures were chained to the side of a livestock trailer, which is illegal since the regulations demand that each animal is transported in an individual compartment. In 2005, a USDA inspection found sick cats, quarantined without a treatment plan. In both cases, it's clear that R & R's actions led to the suffering of animals. Compassion and ethical considerations aside, Montcalm County is, in this time of financial crisis, enriching R & R, a private corporation, at the expense of its taxpayers. Montcalm County is giving dogs and cats to R & R and based on R & R’s own submission to the USDA, R & R resells the animals for an average of $311 each. The only one who has benefited from the deal is R & R which resells animals at a huge profit. The animals don't win since they loose the chance at finding a new home. Montcalm County looses any income from adoptions and also the goodwill that a well run shelter generates. Instead, the relationship between the dealer and the shelter is a source of bad publicity for Montcalm County and its elected officials, with many groups even calling for a boycott of all Montcalm businesses until the shelter stops selling to research. I respectfully request that, in considering the renewal of the R & R contract (or even entering into one with another Class B dealer), you take into account the concerns and welfare of your community (economic as well as social) and have Montcalm County take another step into the 21st century by leaving pound seizure behind. Please do not renew the R & R contract. It is the ultimate betrayal. Sincerely, Polly Grunfeld Sack Fairport, New York ________________________________ Sample Letter # 2 To whom it concerns, Please vote against renewing the R & R Research contract on Jan 12. The contract allows innocent dogs and cats, some of them surrendered pets, to be turned into research subjects where they suffer cruelties and atrocities. I have read of some researchers putting acid in a dogs eyes, inflicting pain and withholding pain medication, gassing the animals, chaining them, allowing sick animals to go without treatment. I have read that R & R has been criticized for violations and for cruelty. Breeding and using companion animals for research purposes is barbaric and inhumane. Allowing it to continue is wrong. It is understandable that people can become desensitized to behaviors, conditions and practices once they have become accustomed to them. This could make it seem "normal" for dogs and cats to be used and abused in this way when it has been happening unchallenged for generations. Or sometimes human nature can cause people to turn a "blind eye" to awful things and simply be in denial. I'll bet those poor animals aren't in denial. Please open your hearts and vote accordingly to STOP the practice of using companion animals in research. Please do not renew the R & R contract. Please embrace compassion and courage. Sincerely, Susan Hayley, Director Angel Dog Rescue Georgetown, GA

Kuma needs sponsors -- Wednesday November 26th, 2008

Someone left Kuma tied to a gate in the front of an animal shelter. A volunteer found her one evening when she was leaving. It was soon discovered WHY poor Kuma was left there.... Kuma has demodectic mange! This is not contagious, but it causes Kuma to lose her hair and get sort of a rash around her eyes, neck and various patches on her body. Fortunately, we caught it early enough and she shouldn't have TOO many vet visits. We are asking for sponsors for her... her first vet visit was almost $100! and she'll need one, maybe two more. Thanks for your support! (you can meet Kuma at our next adoption event, December 20th)

Mia had her puppies! -- Thursday November 13th, 2008

Mia had her pups Thursday evening! She went into labor around 5 p.m. and immediately had two little male pups, both black with ears just like hers. One has a white paw and the other has brown paws with a little brown over his eye. Her third pup was very large and a very light brown color. He/she was still born. We did all that we could to revive the little guy but it was no use. =( The fourth pup is an all white pup, also very large, Female! She is very healthy. Mom is doing well but tired. We'll keep you posted. Pups are eating well and gaining weight every day. Mia is a good mom and only leaves her little ones to stretch her legs outside and to eat.

Bebe's Amazing Journey! -- Sunday November 9th, 2008

Bebe's Amazing Journey to Life! Henry, formerly known as Bebe, was surrendered to a Weim rescue in Florida in January of 2005. Yep, 2005. That is his picture, above, from 2005! He stayed there, in an outside kennel (similar to a boarding facility) all those years. He was not getting adopted because he is a weim/boxer/something mix, not the typical purebred Weim that the rescue deals with. People coming to that rescue are looking to adopt a purebred Weim, not a mix like poor Bebe (now renamed Henry). So there he sat. And sat. And sat. He began to go stir crazy in his kennel after all those years. (wouldn't you?) He's a smart guy, and he was bored. He tried to escape a few times, he felt he was in jail. He developed some bad habits while he was there, some food aggression was one of them. (no biggy for us, we can fix that in no time). He is friendly and loves to play, but being kept in that kennel situation all those years really took a toll on his mental health. His health began to deteriorate, big time. Once he began to go down hill, he went down hill, and FAST. The rescue began wondering what they were going to do with him, and felt they had lost all hope. Someone got word of it and posted a frantic plea on the national lab forum... Now., our rescue gets mounds of emails DAILY begging, pleading, for us to save dogs from euthanasia. We get so many of them we simply have to just hit the delete button or we'll cry all day long non-stop. For whatever reason, one of the volunteers decided to hit the other button this time, the button that says "read". It was Bebe's picture and his story, sent from an unknown person named Joyce, who saw his story on the lab forum and felt she needed to help him. Can you blame her? Immediately, upon seeing the picture, the volunteer forwarded the picture of Bebe to all the other volunteers in the group. With an overwhelming response, the group DEMANDED that we save this dog. The wheels were set in motion. One road block after another: how do we get a dog from Florida all the way to Western NY? Crazy, huh? Not for a dedicated group of people. Joyce, the lab forum person, lives in Rhode Island, and she basically took the bull by the horns and made all the arrangements. She found a local company to drive there to get him and the sending rescue agreed to pay. But the local company kept delaying the transport- something that was very detrimental to Bebe's health. He was going downhill and we didn't think he'd even make it. He needed to be in a home, and quickly. A decision was made to pull him from that kennel situation and place him with a kind, local gentleman to foster him for a couple weeks until we could figure out what to do to get him here to us. We didn't wait long, because his very anxious, very determined, foster mom, Deb, from right here in Akron, NY, decided that she was going to take her weekend and DRIVE herself all the way to North Carolina to go and get him. Someone is meeting her there, with Bebe, of course. That is happening as we speak. We'll keep you posted on Bebe's AMAZING journey. And we'll post his updated pictures, of course. We can't wait to meet him!

Abby stolen from shelter -- Sunday November 9th, 2008

Can you believe it? One of our dogs was stolen from the shelter before she even got to us! This is Big Girl Abby, She'll be here in a few days, Karen will be fostering her. Her pull fee was paid at the shelter, and they planned on coming back the next day to get her, and that very night, SOMEONE BROKE INTO THE POUND AND STOLE HER!!!! Don't worry, they caught him and she's safe, read the story below and click on the link to watch the news clip. Thanks, Karen, for sending it to us. Whew! That was a close one Abby girl! _____________________________________ Big Girl's Big Adventure Billy Craig Fricks, 55, of New Orleans, LA was arrested yesterday and charged with burglary 3rd degree. Fricks broke into Limestone Veterinary Clinic Wednesday night and stole a black labrador retriever. Frick cut the fence and entered the building. Fricks had been living under the I 65 bridge and went to Limestone Veterinary Clinic on Wednesday asking the employees to give him the dog. Fricks was located under the bridge yesterday with the dog in his possession. Fricks was transferred to the Limestone County Jail. Lt. Floyd Johnson investigated the case. Terry Lee Nutter, 52, of Athens was arrested yesterday on a robbery warrant from Chilton County Alabama. Nutter was found with Billy Craig Fricks. Nutter was held awaiting extradition to Chilton County. (Karen): The news crew from a different TV station came out to the Dog Pound with a film crew and interviewed Timberly. There was also video of Big Girl Abby playing in the play yard. YES, she was stolen by homeless people and they took her with them to the overpass where they were staying. A lady saw "some homeless men dragging a dog down Hwy 72, and the dog didn't want to go." She called and reported it to The Dog Pound the next morning. She had seen these men before and reported to the investigating detective that she saw them under the bridge with the dog. Big Girl Abby was recovered. She is fine and she is at my house right now, playing in the yard with my dog Wilson. http://www.whnt.com/ This has the video. Go to the one titled "Homeless man in Athens", there is a video of Big Girl Abby. While I was at the pound, her owner came in. The lady says her name is Suzy, Big Suzy. She rescued her from the Animal Shelter when she was 6 months old. She said she would give me her vet records. She is happy that she is going to be adopted and have a home where she will have lots of love and attention.

Help Chance! -- Wednesday June 18th, 2008

Meet Chance, he is a 6 month old pup who came into the shelter and loved everyone. There was a problem though, he has Demodeptic mange. It's not contagious, but doesn't make Chance the prettiest looking dog to see. He will begin treatment at the sending rescue, but once he's with us, we will take over the vetting. This can be very expensive so we are asking for donations. Chance will be here on the 28th, we can't wait to meet him! Check him out on our website-he has the most adorable face and how could we turn that down????

New Puppies! -- Friday May 16th, 2008

We recieved an urgent call to take in two moms! One mom has 7 pups, and the other mom is due any day now! If anyone can help us by donating a new, unused plastic swimming pool (for a whelping box), towels, quality puppy food, and puppy starter food we would greatly appreciate it! Check our website daily as we will be posting their pictures soon (even though they won't be up for adoption yet) and we will be puttiing updates about them up.

Pheonix -- Tuesday May 13th, 2008

Phoenix was the friendly dog who came to us very, very skinny. He was placed in one of the best foster home ever, he packed on those pounds, received the socializing he needed, then found his forever home! Yay Phoenix!
